Parallel Cards / Printer Port

Parallel ports are mostly used to connect a printer or software dongle. It the past it was also used to exchange data between computers and scanner devices. With the parallel interface, the 8 data bits of a character are transmitted in parallel (simultaneously) via eight data lines.

Serial and Parallel Cards / Printer Port

The serial interface enables digital data exchange between computers or computers to devices (e.g. modem, printer, plc, CNC machines, etc.). With the serial interface, the individual data bits of a character are transmitted one after the other (serially) over the line. The standardization distinguishes between different standards such as RS-232, RS-422, RS-485. The RS-232 is intended for general digital data transmission. It can transmit and receive data at the same time (full duplex). Like RS-232, RS-422 also works full duplex and is mostly used to extend the distance between transmitter and receiver. RS-485 is more intended for industrial use and works half-duplex, which means it can either be sent or received at the same time. RS-485 is typically used as a bus system to control up to 32 devices.
